In April 2026, the FBI apprehended an alleged member of Scattered Spider, whose VPN usage did not shield him from exposure due to the GDID. This unique identifier, tied to Windows accounts, is persistently stored on Microsoft’s servers. While it cannot be deleted, users can mitigate tracking by disabling certain services and blocking server connections.
