The Energetic Costs of Cellular Computation

A study examining the energy consumption of cells performing computations in response to environmental cues.

Cells perform computations in response to environmental cues. This study calculates the energetic costs of determining ligand concentration using a simple two-component cellular network based on a noisy version of the Berg-Purcell strategy. It shows that learning about external concentrations requires breaking detailed balance and consuming energy.
