Postgres in Rust: Three Failures Before Passing 100% Regression Tests

The journey of rewriting Postgres in Rust, lessons learned, and the development of pgrust for improved database performance.

After four attempts and spending $100k, we successfully rewrote Postgres in Rust, resulting in 1.8 million lines of idiomatic Rust code known as pgrust. This initiative aims to leverage AI for a superior Postgres version. Currently, the fifth iteration of pgrust shows promising performance, being faster than Postgres for transactional workloads and competitive with Clickhouse for analytical queries.
